Before reading this post, you should read the portions of Reference 1 pertaining to the spreader bars that I made to compensate for improperly-made parking brake shoes.
A better option would be to purchase a kit that is sold for the Volvo V70, available from RockAuto, et al:
I purchased the Raybestos H17437 kit, shown in the photo:
Only the adjustable spreader bars (and maybe the grease) should be used on the Volvo 240 and 700-series; the springs and retainers on the left side of the photo should be either discarded or saved for future use.
Similar kits, available for other Volvo models, such as the 850, S60, XC90, etc., also contain suitable adjustable spreader bars.
